ITC launches training series on food safety in Peru’s northern corridor.

ITC on 16 April launched the quality-related component of the project ‘Export development in Peru’s northern corridor’ (‘Región Exportadora’), which is funded by Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

The half-day seminar on building awareness on food safety in world trade, which was held in Chiclayo and attracted more than 70 participants, was the first in a series of food-safety workshops that will be held under the project. Additional seminars will be held in August, October and December. The overall objective is to raise awareness of the food industry in the region on the need to improve food safety and its implications for international trade.

Strengthening of TSIs

The quality-related component aims to strengthen the capacity of trade related institutions (TSIs) — such as the Peru Export and Tourism Promotion Board (PrompPeru) — in the northern corridor of Peru to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) better understand and implement food-safety systems based on hazard analysis and critical control points (HACCP).

The programme, which is running from April to December 2012, will prepare 10 trainers/counsellors using ITC’s methodology and training pack on HACCP. The programme will also raise awareness of food-safety standards and HACCP in 10 selected enterprises from the agriculture and agro-processing sector based in Chiclayo and Piura.

Through the network activation of the trainers/counsellors and the anchorage of the training programme within the TSIs, the trainers/counsellors will use their experience and knowledge to train and assist additional SMEs in implementing HACCP after the completion of the project.
