(Doha) PwC France and Maghreb and the International Trade Centre (ITC) announced today a partnership to create wealth and jobs for young people and women in developing countries by fostering sports as an economic sector.

A letter of intent formalizing the partnership was signed between Nizar Yaiche, Leader Global Digital Network, Government and Public Services and Partner PwC France and Maghreb, and ITC Executive Director Pamela Coke-Hamilton on 6 March 2023 in Doha, Qatar, during the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5).

This partnership builds on discussions between the two organizations to develop sports as a sector of economic activity through key areas of collaboration, including advocacy for decent employment for young people and women; development of technical cooperation projects to be proposed to donors; and exploration of opportunities in areas of common interest, such as migration and gender.

The actions are in line with the idea that sports can be a tool for social cohesion and sustainable development, contributing to peace, the empowerment of women and youth, and support of health and education.

Ms. Coke-Hamilton said: ‘We work closely with youth to strengthen their job-relevant skills, promote entrepreneurship and enhance access to finance. With our commitment to developing sports as a sector, in collaboration with PwC, we aim to create more quality jobs, foster entrepreneurship among women and youth, and strengthen the overall sports ecosystem for development.’

Mr. Yaiche said: ‘The sports industry is incredibly diverse, crossing multiple sectors and encompassing any activity that derives income from sports, such as media rights, fitness, ticketing, hospitality, advertising, sponsorships and merchandise. Together with ITC, we’re happy to leverage the sports industry’s pace of growth and develop projects to benefit youth and women, including through international sporting events.’

This collaboration will contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular by promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.
